SAAR

I lay in bed that night with Alex in my arms, feeling grateful and anxious at the same time.

From the next room, I could hear every time Devin shuffled and moved, and I felt strange and guilty.

I must have been deep in thought, because I did not realize that Alex was awake until his small hand brushed up and down my chest, making me shiver.

I caught his hand, bringing it to my lips and kissing his palm.

This time, he shivered and placed his hand on my cheek, turning my face toward him. I thought he wanted to kiss me and be intimate, but I did not want to make Devin jealous and he would hear us.

Before I could say that though, Alex whispered quietly, “You’ll fix this, right?”

I nodded, even though I didn’t yet know what to do.

“Devin doesn’t deserve this. He’s lost everything. He deserves to have his life partner, at the very least.”

I swallowed, overcome by the empathy in Alex’s voice. He was right. Devin had to be protected. Unfortunately, I had a lingering suspicion that he would have to suffer first.

“If the bond is not complete, we may be able to arrange something to make it official.”

Alex was silent for a long moment.

“You mean like, the auctions and ceremony and everything?” he asked.

“Why do you sound so excited?” I asked smiling, despite myself.

Alex chuckled quietly.

“I don’t know.”

Leaning closer, I pressed our lips together chastely.

“I will speak to my alfather first thing in the morning.”

Satisfied, Alex settled back down on my shoulder, allowing me to pull him in close as we drifted to sleep.

True to my word, I wasted no time telling my alfather what had happened the next morning.

He was stunned, as I had been. We ended up spending the morning in the chilly archives, shivering as we bent over scrolls, trying to find answers.

“If Devin’s words are true, it changes everything,” he said. “But first, we must be sure.”

The guards were still stationed outside Eisa’s door when we arrived. They would be there until we as a group decided Eisa’s punishment, but now everything had shifted. They might be there until the bond broke instead…

The moment we entered and Eisa saw us, he was on his feet, coming to a stop far too close to me, anxiety in his green gaze.

“How is Devin? Is he okay? What has he been doing? Where is he?”

I reached out and took him by both shoulders, forcing enough distance between us to look at his face.

He looked worse than I had ever seen him. There were bags under his eyes, and his green scales, normally shining, appeared dull. It was as Devin had said.

“You look exhausted,” I finally said.

“Of course, I am!” Eisa snapped. “I’m without my mate. I can’t take it!”

I shook my head gently.

“Eisa, look at us,” I said, gesturing to my alfather. “We are both mated.”

“Bonded pairs do not need to constantly be together,” Alfather said. “We are apart from our mates, but we are not in anguish over it.
