“Your Lordship’s mail.” Marias bowed, holding out a silver tray with a stack of envelopes.

“More mail! I wish I had time for it…” Farizel took the letters. “Thank you, Marias.”

The butler left. Farizel walked to his desk and unlocked a small drawer with more letters in it where he intended to place the new correspondence as well. It would have to wait until after the princess’ birthday; busy with all the preparations and quite a few other things, he couldn’t spare a moment today.

He flipped through the envelopes, making sure there was nothing urgent. A letter without the sender’s name or return address caught his attention. Farizel pulled it out of the stack. The handwriting, clear and firm, was unknown to him. “To His Lordship Farizel Narr,” it said. “Confidential.”

“I wonder what kind of a surprise this is,” he muttered, opening it.

He took out a small piece of paper, unfolded it, and raised his eyebrows: the letter was in Tirganian.

“What in the world…”

“Your Lordship,” he read, “I beg your forgiveness for writing anonymously. The disturbing rumors I hear force me to do so, both for your protection and mine. Besides, I do not believe you would remember me, anyway, as we have never been introduced, though we did meet several times during your stay in my country.

I do not dare to take much of your time, so I will get right to the reason of why I am writing this letter. While traveling through Meoria, I have become deeply concerned by constant rumors and implications I hear of the possibility of a war between your country and mine. Vague and unclear at first, the rumors did not bother me much until I had reached Kanavar. But here, sometimes it feels like the war is imminent. I have been seeing Meorian soldiers openly talk about it and contemplate how long Tirgan would last after the first attack. It sounds like the attack is already planned, and, what shocks me the most, it is going to be unannounced.

Your Lordship, I plead that you tell me whether any of this is true. I personally see no reason for any disagreements between Tirgan and Meoria, not to mention a war. I have always held great respect for Meoria and His Majesty king Alvard, and I refuse to believe that he would consider a sudden attack upon the peaceful and unsuspecting neighbor. Yet what I hear troubles me, and I can no longer ignore it. You are the only person, Lord Farizel, whom I find possible to contact and whose word I can trust regarding this matter. Being so close to His Majesty as you are, I am certain you know the truth, and I hope and pray that you would be willing to share it.

I am well aware that if the dreadful rumors are true, my letter may be perceived as a request to betray your king. If the attack is planned, and you confirm it, you would be alerting the enemy.
