Scouting parties went out and scouting parties came in; none could find a way around the strange barrier that turned them into primitives. They had left early in the morning each time and been back by lunchtime. There were few passable means down from the lodge, since it sat basically atop a high plateau. Tall, thick brush permeated nearly everywhere, and even repelling down one of the cliff areas had been tried, thankfully by an expert since the rope had become flimsy and useless partway down, as had one of his boots when his foot reached it. The barrier appeared to surround them. Going straight through dinosaur territory was the only way out.

The group geared up with long sharpened sticks, machetes, and explosive chemical powders they’d created from industrial cleaners and wrapped in pieces of Alice’s fur coat. They hoped to end the dinosaur problem once and for all. Wild Ron, Lonnie, and a few others were going.

Shelly wanted to bring a dose of sanity, a hopeful attempt at peaceful communication, to any further dinosaur encounter, so she put survival supplies in her own pack, not weapons. Her heart panged at leaving Greg in his perpetual state of PTSD and depression, but she felt his needs would best be served by going on the mission.

“Y’all follow my lead,” whispered Ron when they neared the barrier. “Walk soft.”

The group slowly went through the barrier, trying to ignore the dizziness, and heard snuffling and munching sounds nearby. Nearing the clearing, they saw a huge green-skinned body and a group of yellow Stygimoloch in the distance. Two of the antelope-like dinosaurs were butting their head spikes, while the others seemed to be cheering them on.

Ron and Lonnie raised their spears and took aim.

“They’re herbivores, you morons,” said Shelly, the resident scientist, “so just don’t piss them off. I’d rather not get stepped on or kicked in the head, but they definitely aren’t going to eat us.”

“I do believe we have company,” a voice from above bellowed. It attached to the enormous green body mass by a long, narrow neck. “Care to come eat with us?” The comparatively small head of the Brachiosaurus, still the size of a car with headlight eyes, grinned right in front of their faces.

They tentatively stepped into the clearing and saw the area had been leveled like the Amazon Rain Forest, mostly due to the seventy-foot-long giant and apparent appetite of it and its friends.

The dinosaur belched and started chewing again. “You know, it’s so much like when I was a giraffe, really. I’m bigger. Gosh, I don’t want to think of how huge I’ll be when I grow up. Tall is one thing, but a big-ass body is another.”

No one could find words for a moment.

“Where are, uhh, your friends? The ones like you,” Shelly asked.

“The Black Death and lions used to eat us, at least at my age, but they’re T. rex and Acrocanthosaurus now, and their size increased with mine. But I’m likely not long for
