Providing a Scaffold for Success

What drives me when I am facilitating workshops is the thought that what I am doing with teachers and administrators in those sessions will find its way into the nation’s classrooms. Workshop facilitators do what they do with educators so that students will benefit. As has been mentioned frequently here, this means modeling communication, thinking, and engagement strategies that teachers can use. Whether the subject is social studies, math, science, or language arts; effective delivery is critical to success.

If two students—or adults—are going to communicate effectively, they will find the going easier if each attempts to understand the other. Costa (2008) affirms that one communications tool that assists with understanding is paraphrasing. According to Costa, paraphrasing sends four messages:
