Chapter Fourteen

The sound of my name pulled me out of my misery. Not because anyone was actually talking to me, but because I realized it would be dark in a couple of hours, and then I’d be wandering the forest with no camping gear, no food, and nothing but my slowly dying phone for light. I needed to make my way back to the road so I could call for help, especially now that I’d started hearing things that weren’t there.

With a groan, I stood up and stretched, cursing the cold for making me so stiff while I sulked. Then I heard it again.

“Lana?”

Yup, I was hallucinating. Although, if I were hallucinating that someone would brave the cold to come rescue me, the voice in my head would belong to Riz Ahmed. This voice sounded a lot like—

“Lana? Are you there?”

“Jason? Jason!”

I bounded to my feet and raced toward the sound, not even trying to hide the happiness and relief on my face. I didn’t know why he was here, and I didn’t care. A moment later, he rounded a turn in the path and stepped into view. I catapulted into his arms.

“Lana! Thank goodness,” he said. “I thought I’d never find you.”

“What are you doing here? Are you a mirage?”

He chuckled and set me back on my feet. “No. I’m real. I came to get you. There’s a huge storm coming in tonight. It’s not safe to be out here. You’ll have to look for the Governor tomorrow.”

“You know, that’s way above and beyond your duties as Welcome Wagon.”

“Oddly enough, saving your life isn’t in the Legislative Mentor Handbook.” He swallowed. “I’d like to think that, before our argument earlier, we were becoming friends.”

Friends. What a beautiful word. “Definitely. But still, driving two hours north? I have a map. If things had gone as planned, I’d be on my way back right now.”

He shuffled his feet and avoided my gaze. “Sometimes I get feelings about things…”

“Come on, what gives?” I asked. “It’s been one hell of a day, and I’m all done with people I trusted lying to me.”

At that, he finally met my eyes. “I overheard a few guys talking in the cafeteria about how Steve canceled an afternoon meeting because he needed to ‘go into the woods or something.’ I put two and two together.” He paused. “Look, I know you don’t want to hear anything bad about Steve, but—”

“You were right. I was wrong.”

“What happened?”

I shook my head. “Not now. Incidentally, I appreciate you coming to my rescue, especially after the things I said earlier. I also appreciate the lack of ‘I told you so.’”

He grinned. “I just got here. Give me a second.”

I snort-laughed at that. “How did you know? He told me you didn’t like him because you both liked the same girl, and you never got over her picking him.”

“Ha!” A bellow of laughter escaped him. “Oh, that’s rich. That’s what he said?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“He slept with my ex-wife.”

I gasped. “While you were married?”

“Yup.”

“And he knew—?”

“He knew.
