These initiatives are based on conventions of the International Labour Organisation and address health and safety issues. SA 8000 introduced management systems into the → human rights arena, with the goal of preventing problems. By introducing health and safety training, manuals, and safety procedures, management systems can prevent accidents in the workplace. SA 8000 is a → certification standard, and over 1,000 companies are certified.

SA 8000, the ETI and the FLA have developed codes and guidance materials for companies concerned with making their supply chains more socially responsible and safe.

Since the development of SA 8000 and the ETI, there has been an increase in sector-based CSR initiatives, many of which have made in-roads into health and safety issues, including the:• Business for Social Compliance Initiative;

• Electronics Industry Code of Conduct;

• Ethical Tea Partnership;

• International Cocoa Initiative; and

• International Council of Toy Industries, CARE Process, among others.
