Everything that required some form of coordinated effort among dozens of Meerkats was either not done reliably or was debated endlessly in groups that were increasingly frustrated with each other for their inability to get things done. Even those who wanted to help were often in the dark on what was expected or were playfully pouring a great deal of time and creativity into tasks that just needed to be done in a certain way that some of the others already knew.

Nadia, Ayo, Matt, and Tamu went to Lena and told her that they needed to talk. When Lena asked what was bothering them—and something obviously was bothering them—she heard:

After the initial excitement around bug farming, Tamu found it harder and harder to get enough volunteers to do the routine work, which realistically was not all pleasant. He spent so many hours himself doing the farming that he was starting to feel exhausted.

Nadia reported that some of the clan who had volunteered to help with new litters were just not suitable for the role. But who should tell them? Who had the right to tell them?

Matt explained to Lena and the others that despite his best efforts, the burrows were in chronically poor condition. No one was eager or, apparently, had the skill to build and maintain these spots.

And Ayo just told her, “You know what I think about safety and guarding.”
