âHello Hope,â he said, smiling broadly. âI was planning to come and see you soon but this is even better. I always wonder if I might bump into you on one of my visits home, but I didnât expect to see you on this beach at this time of night. I assume that is your dog. So how have you been?â
Hope finally found her voice. âHow ⦠how have I been? Are you being serious? Itâs been eight years, Rob.â
He had broken her heart at university, when heâd told her he would not be returning to Betancourt Bay, but was instead going to travel the world for a year or two, working as he went to support himself and to enable him to move on to the next destination. That was eight years ago.
Hope was fully aware that he had been back a few times since to visit his parents, Jean and Victor Mills who lived in Rosehip Cottage, but those visits had been fleeting and heâd never once made time to knock on the front door of The White House and say hello to her.
A tiny furrow formed between his brows. âEight years? Yes, I suppose it has. But it doesnât feel that long.â
Hope wanted to scream, âIt does to me!â Instead she said, âTime flies when youâre having fun.â
He tilted his head to one side. âYou or me? It hasnât all been fun, you know. Iâve had to work along the way. Thereâve been one or two close shaves with dangerous creatures, both animal and human. And Iâve missed you, Hope. More than I thought I would. I must say, youâre looking stunning. If Iâd known youâd look this good I wouldâve come home sooner. That was a joke. You always looked good. Iâve wanted to come to your house so many times over the years, Hope. But I knew I couldnât. If I saw you again I knew Iâd want to stay and I couldnât do that to myself. I needed to get the wanderlust out of my system before I could think of settling down. I hope you understand that. But God Iâve thought of you so often. I canât believe itâs eight years and I still havenât got over you.â He looked her in the eye. âWhat about you, Hope? Have you got over me?â
He moved closer and slipped a hand around her waist, easing her towards him until their faces almost touched.
Why couldnât she speak? Why couldnât she push him away?
âNo. Not entirely,â she whispered.
Why hadnât she lied?
The smile spread across his face and he tilted her chin upwards with one finger of his free hand then he traced a line from her chin to her lips, across her left cheek and then down to her neck.
âYou have no idea how happy that makes me,â he said, his voice thick with pent up desire.
âRob,â she said. âItâs been eight years.â She had meant to chastise him but it had sounded more like a plea, even to her ears.
