TEN
Crash! The sound came from the first floor. Then a commotion erupted, with shouting and something slamming into a wall.
Brandiâs body shook uncontrollably as she ran out of the room. Just as she descended the stairs, she saw Rhett standing over the man in flannel, the intruderâs arm hiked behind his back.
The man squealed, âLet go. Let go. I didnât take nothinâ.â
After a second look, she realized the guy was more of a kid than an adultâsomewhere between sixteen and eighteen.
âIâm Texas Ranger Rhett Kincaid. Identify yourself.â
The kid struggled against his hold. âBrice Patterson, dude. I wasnât doinâ nothing.â
âBrice, when I let go, donât try to run away.â Rhettâs tone held authority. âI need to ask you some questions.â
âOkay. Okay.â
Rhett released his grip and stood. âWhat are you doing here?â
âNothing.â The teen slung his bangs out of his eyes and then yanked down his shirt that had ridden up.
Brandi stepped over. âDid you see a young woman here?â
Brice frowned and hesitated. âWhy are you asking?â
âSheâs my sister.â Her heart pounded. Hope soared he might have spotted Sadie.
The kid looked her up and down. âI ainât seen nobody.â
Rhett took a step forward. âWeâre trying to find her. Itâs important. Sheâs in danger.â
Brice glanced around like searching for a way to bolt. Needle tracks dotted his arm. He jerked his sleeves down when he saw Brandiâs gaze. âI didnât talk to her.â
âBut you saw her?â Brandi tried to keep her tone calm, afraid heâd stop talking.
The kid nodded. âThere was a chick here.â
âCome on, Brice. Spit out what you know.â Rhett folded his arms. âI have nowhere else to go today.â He glanced at Brandi with a cocked eyebrow.
She caught on. âMe, neither. I have all day.â
Brice shuffled his feet. âI want to go home.â
âDo your parents know youâre shooting up?â
âThey donât care what I do.â He held his hands in the air. âLike I said. I didnât talk to her. But I saw a girl a couple of days ago with a kid. I hang out here sometimes when I want to be alone, and I saw a car parked behind the barracks.â
âWhat kind of car?â Rhett asked.
Brandi found it difficult not to take over the conversation, but she had to admit Rhett was probably better at getting answers. If they knew what model of car Sadie was driving, that could be instrumental in locating her sister.
Brice shrugged. âI dunno. A small dark car with faded paint on the hood. Didnât have no hubcaps.â
âGo on.â Rhett nodded.
âI waited around until I saw who was in the bunk room. I heard that kid cry and then the lady walked by the window.â
Brandi stepped forward. âHow old was this kid? Was it a boy or girl?â As soon as the words were out, she wished she could take them back. The scowl on Briceâs face warned her she was an unwanted intrusion.
Rhett mustâve sensed the teenâs hostility and said, âAnswer her.â
âI dunno how old the boy was. Maybe one or two. I ainât good with kids.
