NATURAL WAYS TO BRING OUT YOUR CHILD’S INNER MATH GEEK

Many young children are able to recite numbers from 1 to 10 or recognize the symbol for each number even though they don’t understand what the numbers mean. These are verbal and spatial skills, similar to reciting and recognizing the alphabet. It has nothing to do with being able to calculate or reason mathematically. Just as it was more important for children to learn preliteracy skills than to recognize words on flash cards, it is more important for children to learn the underlying concepts of mathematics than to identify numbers. What does more than mean? What does bigger than look like? What does three really look and feel like? Still, children are sometimes asked to identify numbers in a school interview or on certain intelligence tests. Many tests evaluate math skills through simple addition and subtraction word problems and counting questions.
