Dyson looked to Bertram, who muted the channel before he asked, “They can’t tell by our IFF that we’re who we say we are?”

“Apparently not, Commander.” Dyson paused before ordering, “Helm, once I give the word take us out of this system on a course for the border of what was Confederation space.”

“Aye, sir. Course laid in and ready at your command,” the helm officer replied.

Dyson nodded to Bertram to reopen the channel before saying, “Human Empire ship, we are not lying about who and what we are. But we will not tolerate being threatened by someone who can’t recognize an Earth Confederation starship when they see one.”

This time the voice from the Human Empire ship replied, “ECS Andrea, you will stand down now and be prepared to be taken into our hold.”

Shaking his head, Dyson replied, “I don’t think so.” He cut the channel while ordering, “Now, Lieutenant.”

Nodding, the helm officer touched the control on his console that made the Andrea jump into hyperspace and away from the Human Empire vessel.

From his ops console Bertram looked up, saying, “I don’t believe this, but it looks like they’ve tracked our course and are setting up a blockade in our path.”

Dyson looked at the blank viewscreen, picturing the cylinder-like imperial ships in their path as he ordered, “Helm, change course. We’re going to fly right through the Sol system on a course to the edge of the galaxy.”

Nodding, the helm officer changed their course but looked back at Dyson, saying, “Sir, I’m reading a larger star at the heart of the Sol system than what was there when we made our first jump.”

Dyson got up from his command chair and walked over to the helm and looked at the sensor readings before ordering, “Put it on screen.”

With a nod the helm officer transferred the data from their console to the main viewscreen, and once it was there the three of them saw the larger sun in Sol’s place, making Dyson step back a couple of feet.

Shaking his head, Dyson asked, “How could Sol have grown so much?”

Looking at the larger sun, Bertram replied, “There are some theories even in our time that the sun would grow to be a red giant and devour the inner planets.” He then looked at the sensor screens before saying, “Captain, we’ve got three Human Empire ships appearing in our path.”

Dyson sighed as he walked back to the command chair and sat down. He ordered, “Helm, change course to the La Grange point to where we departed from, then take us on a course to the edge of the galaxy.”

Again the helm officer replied, “Aye, sir. Changing course for the La Grange point between the Sol and Alpha Centauri systems.”

Dyson then leaned over to look at Bertram as he ordered, “Commander, the next time we’re close to one of those ships, scan them. I want to know how they are able to jump ahead of us so fast.”

Nodding, Bertram replied, “Aye, sir.”
