CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

THE NORTHWEST CORNER of the holding pen had been unofficially annexed by the band of earthlings. Gerald stood sentry behind the bars of energy which formed their prison. Rising overhead to form a dome, the beams crisscrossed one another in a haphazard manner. Gerald had seen what happened if one came into contact with the rays when one of the Jarkadians had accidentally gotten too close. The soldier had survived, but the jolt he received was more than enough to keep everyone from getting within touching distance again.

“I can’t believe that waste of flesh is wandering around here like everything is just hunky dory,” Gerald said, looking toward the tent Robert disappeared into.

“It can’t be too surprising,” Davis said, stepping to his side. “The guy is a serious douche. Does he wear that armor everywhere? I’m sweating like a pig and I’m only wearing this skin tight suit. I bet there is a giant yeast factory underneath all those plates. The humidity in this place is worse than Cambodia.”

“Chapman’s skin condition is the least of our problems,” Gerald said, looking at Davis from the side. “I don’t think I need to state how dire our situation is.”

“No, you don’t, sir,” Davis said. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of options at the moment.”

“Agreed,” Gerald said. “But don’t go losing hope. I need to speak with our young friend over there. I’m probably wasting my time, but it’s worth a shot.”

“I’ll keep watch for Vice-Admiral douche bag Robert Chapman for you, sir,” Davis said before Gerald made his way to the mound of dirt Gaelin had propped himself up against.

“If you see him, you can give the royal salute from me,” Gerald said.

“Will do, sir,” Davis said.

Crossing the short bit of dirt that comprised the earthling territory within the prison dome, Gerald looked down upon Gaelin laying on his side next to his venomous companion.

“I know you enjoy making people uncomfortable, but if you want to stare, could you move to the left? You are blocking the sun and I am trying to even out my tan,” Gaelin said, without looking up.

“Very funny,” Gerald said, sitting down onto a rock. “Where is it?”

“Where is what?” Gaelin said with his eyes closed.

“Stop acting like a little turd. You know what I mean,” Gerald said.

“I have no idea what you are talking about, and I’m pretty sure they are listening in on everything we say,” Gaelin said.

“You may be right,” Gerald said, looking up at the grid of beams pulsing above them. “But it doesn’t really matter. They’ve already got everything. Have you got folks or friends back home that may be worried about you?”

“Yeah, I got a friend, and he keeps tabs on me,” Gaelin said, without looking at Gerald. “I can call him anytime and talk about anything. But I lost my phone. He told me that he is getting ready to take me on a trip to his house, probably not anymore.”

“Just you, or were you gonna bring your friends?” Gerald asked.
