CHAPTER FIFTEEN

THE WEAPON

Marc was ready. He sat waiting for the knock at the door. Like clockwork, he heard three knocks.

“Good morning, Dr. Walker. I’m here to direct you to your meeting site,” the soldier politely said.

Marc followed the soldier out of his room and immediately through a door that led to another corridor.

“Thank you,” Marc said as he was directed into the meeting room. At the other end were three people. The only one Marc recognized was Dr. Allen. As he walked around the perimeter of the room—the middle of it dominated by tables and chairs with a capacity for probably twenty people—he could see in his peripheral vision one of the three people stepping away to the corner. Marc could not help but momentarily stare at the tall man dressed in something resembling business casual attire. The man had an unusual and almost creepy feel as Marc forced his vision back to Dr. Allen and the military person standing in front of a grouping of three chairs in a small triangle-shaped seating formation.

In his thoughts, Marc was laughing: I know what’s creepy about the guy. He is wearing a leisure suit. It looks like the guy stepped out of a time warp fifty years ago. He could not help but smile at the thought. The strange man appeared to smile at him.

“Dr. Walker, this is General Mason,” Allen offered as an introduction. General Mason immediately turned away and sat down directly in the sightline of the unusual-looking man standing in the corner.

“We’ve met over the phone,” Marc responded.

Dr. Allen sat down and said, “I’ll turn it over to General Mason to lead the opening of our discussion.”

“Dr. Walker, I could say a lot of pleasantries, but that would only cut short our time. You were brought here as the consequence of an urgent matter of national security. I have a few questions to ask you and request your honest and forthright responses,” the General said. “Are we clear?”

“Of course, I will tell the truth,” Marc was in the middle of responding when he was immediately and forcefully cut off by the General.

“I don’t need to hear that bullshit. You’ve been lying to us and the world. So, let’s not get sidetracked by your hot air. Understood?” the General said more in the form of a statement than a question, cocking his head to the side. From the angle, as he looked at Mason, Marc was again distracted by the tall, strange man standing behind the General—his hands folded, motionless.

“Lying about what?” Marc said, attempting to keep a tight lid on his dislike and distrust of Mason.

“You know what I’m talking about,” Mason said, laughing. “You’re not the person everyone thinks you are, are you, Dr. Walker?”

“Are you a therapist?” Marc said with an unmistakable air of contempt.

“We’re getting off on the wrong foot,” the General said, only to be interrupted by Marc.

“Show me some respect, and I will do the same,” Marc said.

The General sat silently without speaking—his face
