James stood in the airlock and bounced impatiently on the balls of his feet. The rubber of his boot soles made squeaking noises on the plastic. When the hiss of gas finally sounded and unlocked the blast door to the cave, he rushed forward.
The large cavern was noticeably more crowded than usual.
Ten figures in hazmat suits were standing in a wide semicircle around the teleporter and had assault rifles pointed at the passageway, which was lit up like a celestial portal at the end of the ramp. Three unarmed men stood close together nearby, obviously engaged in a heated discussion.
âHey! Put down your weapons! Sheâs not a threat!â shouted James, but they paid no attention to him, as if he wasnât even there. So, he ran to the scientists. Meeks, Falkenhagen, and Smailov stepped away from each other as he ran toward them.
âMr. Hamilton!â the former cosmonaut said, blinking in amazement.
âPavar changed her mind.â
âYou were obviously right,â Falkenhagen said, nodding appreciatively.
But there was an unmistakable doubt in his gazeâjust like in the other two. They were probably still trying to sort out Nortonâs statements about James for themselves. But that didnât concern him now.
âWhatâs with the guns?â he asked, pointing at the soldiers. âHave they gone crazy?â
âThereâs some kind of golem thatâs formed in the object. What else are they supposed to do? Roll out the red carpet?â Smailov, snorted. âItâs not just a sensation, itâs a potential danger.â
âBullshit! I know Nasaku.â
James tried to break away from them and run to the ramp, but a strong hand grabbed his shoulder and held him back. He turned around and looked into Meeksâs face. Beads of sweat were running down the former Boeing engineer face as if he had just completed a heavy workout.
âBoy, even if youâre right, you donât even know this woman. Youâve known her for how long? A few hours? Half a day? Even if all that is true, then she could be anyone. We donât know anything about her or her species.â
âSheâs human.â
âThat should make us even more suspicious. As far as we know, humans exist only on Earth andââ
âAs far as we know,â James agreed with him. âExactly. Maybe, thanks to her, weâve learned that there are other things than what we know. Other answers. And this woman has them. Aside from the fact that she acted like a good person when I was completely scared and alone in her world, the least we can do is be on our best behavior.â
With that, he broke free. The rubber of Meeksâs gloves slipped off his plastic suit like soap off a sink. He walked between two of the burly soldiers into their overlapping field of fire. But he didnât even want think about what might happen if Nasaku marched through the entrance to the teleporter now, and one of them did something stupid with a nervous finger.
It wasnât a dream, he rejoiced inwardly and gave free rein to his excitement and relief. No imagination! Sheâs here, and the
