Now

Early Morning, Wednesday, July 9, 1969

“The, ah, the ‘Pointdexters,’” Archie says, and then stops. He seems to be at a loss.

“They never talked to me,” I offer. “They never even said hello back to me. It was actually kind of rude.”

“Mm-hmm,” he mutters, and then makes a note of something.

“Mrs. Shepard,” Arthur Hildebrand says, and I notice, for the first time, how dark and yet bright his eyes are. “Mrs. Shepard, I feel that you’re not being entirely honest with us.”

I’ve been picking at my nails this whole time, peeling the pink acrylic off one by one, and now I have a little pile of plastic shards sitting on the coffee table in front of me. It tugs at the nail below, a bit, to try to take them off without acetone, and there’s a crust of blood, now, around my nail beds.

Though I suppose that it could have been there before. That it might not be mine, at all.

“We need exact dates and times,” Reggie says, “of every instance you had access to the chancery and associated buildings.”

“Well,” I say, “that’s easy. Every day, during normal working hours, from June ninth just up until today.”

Arthur Hildebrand is not amused.

“What happened on the Fourth of July?” he asks, and I begin to wonder just how much he already knows about what comes next.
