The bar looked great. Everything was in order, and all Marshall and I had to do was wait for our guests to arrive. Weâd invited half the townâincluding the mayor, even though Greg was sure he wouldnât comeâa few key people from the surrounding areas, and our father and sister.
Our hope was that once people got to know us on a social level, it would instill a sense of familiarity and trust. Perhaps they would give us a shot at representing them for their legal needs, and our firm would finally get up off the ground.
But in all honesty, I wasnât really thinking about any of that. I was thinking about Karly and how her first meeting with my father would go. There was a sliver of fear winding through me that he wouldnât approve of her and do something to embarrass her. Or hurt her feelings.
My protective instinct was working on overdrive, and the tension broiling inside me was almost unbearable. I didnât know exactly what that meant, my almost overwhelming need to keep Karly safe and happy. I just knew it as fact, and I just hoped to avoid a very public, very damning confrontation with my dad at this important event.
What if he did something to ruin it on purpose, just to force Marshall and me to come home? I wouldnât put it past him. We had to be on high alert tonight, and we had to refuse to let him get under our skin.
I turned toward the bar just in time to see Karly emerge from the ladiesâ room, and my heart stopped at the sight of her.
Wearing a red dress that made her legs look like they went on for days, she looked more beautiful than Iâd ever seen her. All my worries flew right out of my head as she noticed me there, and a bright smile lit up her face. I finally remembered to breathe as she started in my direction.
âHey,â she said as she approached, tossing her red curls over one shoulder. âYou look handsome.â
She ran a hand down the lapel of my jacket, and my hands itched to touch her. All over.
âThank you,â I replied, returning her smile. âYou look gorgeous.â
I leaned in and kissed her temple. Her lips were painted a bright red, and I didnât want to mess up the look before the party. Afterward, though, I planned to have that lipstick smeared all over my body.
âThanks,â she murmured, then leaned in to whisper in my ear. âThis dress is so tight, I couldnât wear any underwear. You know, panty lines and all.â
âProve it,â I said with a smirk, pretending her teasing comment wasnât getting the rise out of me she wanted.
But it wasâ¦getting a rise.
âDonât worry,â she said, her fingertips tiptoeing down my chest. âI will.â
âHey, you guys. The place looks great, right?â
Marshall walked up to us with those words, and I opened my mouth to agree with him. Before I could utter a word, I noticed a definitive sneer on Karlyâs faceâdirected at my brother.
