Chapter Eleven

Excitement welled in Ian as he rode with his team toward the emergency supply drop. They’d come through a lot in the last several weeks. It had been difficult enough to cope when the world had lost power in a protracted solar storm all those months ago, but they had managed. But he hadn’t been sure they were going to make it through the theft and recovery of their fuel supplies and the deadly virus that had wiped out a third of the adults in their community. And yet, here they were ready to take on their next challenge, the retrieval of emergency supplies dropped by the armed forces.

He and Della had been so excited to see the pallet loaded with boxes dropped into the woodland at the edge of their town. It only made sense that the two of them should be on the team that located the supplies and held them for the team that would bring the trailer to load them on. The other two, Ellen and Gordon, were good choices too. Ellen had been the head of security at a large manufacturing plant. She knew her weapons. Gordon had been a bartender, but he was fit and good-tempered, able to keep moving through his fatigue and pain.

It went without saying that they all were fatigued. Was it just yesterday that they’d buried thirteen people? And that count didn’t include the children that parents had buried on their own. Yes, the entire community had been affected. They really hadn’t had time to grieve adequately either, but the supplies would not wait. If they didn’t pick them up soon, then someone else would. They could be gone a day from now.

The extraction team, as Ian liked to think of them, as in Ian Carrol is the head of the extraction team, and John Carrol is the head of the follow-along team, rode their bikes two miles to the edge of the woods and then they had to leave them. There were no paths here that they would be able to maneuver with bicycles. So, they locked the bikes together, shouldered their backpacks and proceeded through the high grass meadow that bordered the woodland. It was several hundred acres of hills covered with trees, wetlands, and scrub, and who knew where in all that the supplies could have landed? Hopefully closer to the edge than the middle of the vast area.

They waded through the tall grass to the edge of the forest, Ian hoping that they weren’t going to be covered with ticks when this mission was over. Tallgrass, trees and bushes, he suppressed a shudder. He did not like ticks or leeches, or any other blood-sucking creatures. If vampires were not fictional, he’d probably be afraid of the dark. He made a mental note to tell his crew to check themselves for ticks when they got home. The last thing anyone needed was a case of Lyme disease.

Their sounds were muffled under the canopy of new leaves and evergreens, and they stopped under the near edge of the trees and conferred.
