Echoes

Mike rinsed his hands with cold water and then splashed it over his face. As he dried off with a towel, he studied the image in front of him.

It was weird to see himself in the mirror because in many ways, the twenty-four-year-old version of himself didn’t look that different. Perhaps it was because he knew what was behind those eyes. The face looked a bit thinner, of course, but also less toned and rigid. Mike had always been athletic but never really got into working out and lifting until after Ashley died. It was another outlet for his energy. There were no lines or weight under his eyes. But right now, there was still the same desperation shining from them as there had been back in his life without Ashley in Hidden Cove.

He looked away and then leaned over the sink, thinking.

He wasn’t going to have many private moments like this where he wasn’t talking and acting and trying to appear starry-eyed and ready for the future.

Mike knew he couldn’t do anything until later in the evening. It was too bright out, and all eyes were on him. Everybody, including Vince Levy, was enjoying the reception before dinner started. It had to be after dinner and once the dancing started.

That meant he would have only a limited amount of time to do what he needed to do.

You can’t just grab the guy and gut him even if he’s standing alone in the dark.

Was there a way to get Vince Levy to go back inside the inn? Could he ask one of his buddies for help? He didn’t want to because he didn’t want a single other soul connected with this. He knew how and why people talked, and even the most loyal of friends broke down after being interrogated. No, he needed to do this on his own.

Could he somehow do something to Levy so it looked like he had drowned?

Several scenarios all sank simply because the pavilion was right along the lake. Someone would see. Mike needed to get his target away from the party and the people.

Levy smoked, Mike knew. He would be smoking throughout dinner. During the few times Mike studied the wedding video after learning that Vince Levy had been there, he had only seen the guy twice. Once was during the dancing when he walked past the camera with a pack of cigarettes in his hand.

The loud music and dancing was the time to do something. It was also when the sun would finally set and night would settle in.

He needed to knock the guy out and then bring him somewhere.

But how am I going to do that without someone seeing?

The bathroom door opened and for a brief second Mike knew it was going to be Levy.

God was going to grant his prayer, and Levy would walk in here and that’s when Mike would take his head and bury it in the toilet, drowning him.

The face, however, belonged to Mr. Diephouse, Ashley’s father. He was a tall, white-haired man with a loud voice and personality.
