A Few Extra Cueing Ideas for Help with Anterior Tilts

Since yoga attracts people who are naturally flexible it is common to see students who “rest” in an anterior pelvic tilt. In many students one common situation is tight hip flexors and tight lower back muscles along with soft, unengaged glutes. Any imagery to help them feel heaviness at the bottom of the buttocks near the sit bones can help to release the lower back and encourage the glutes to engage. One example I like to use myself is to imagine there is sand in my back pockets. Another cue I like to use with a private session or students who already “get” imagery is to imagine that there are little hooks on the front (anterior side) of the sit bones. In Mountain, we imagine there is a dowel in front of the sit bones running parallel with the floor. We can “hook" the sit bones onto the dowel to hold the pelvis steady. If I say “hook your sit bones up” to these students, they will firm up their buttocks. This is a subtle action and when students are not experienced enough yet with imagery, they may just clamp the glutes together and tuck their tailbones under moving the pelvis too far into a posterior tilt (which as we talked about above, we don’t want). You can try this imagery and then watch what the student does and then make corrections as needed.
