Teaching Strategies for Student Ownership and Self-Determined Learning

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Teachers at Crozet Elementary School in Albemarle County, Virginia, prioritize enhancing their students' beliefs about themselves as self-determined learners. Crozet principal, Gwedette Crummie, says that their goal is "to teach students to be self-determined … it's teaching them that they can do anything" (Schmitz, 2016). All 5th grade students at Crozet begin the year with a focus on their hopes and dreams—their passions and interests—and use these to set goals for their futures (Schmitz, 2016).

In Chapter 3, we presented a framework to guide the design of interventions and strategies to promote self-determined learning. We now turn to the strategies that emerge from the framework that teachers can implement to promote student ownership and self-determined learning. The Research and Theory section that follows provides a reminder of the structure of Causal Agency Theory, which forms part of that framework.
