Lonnie popped up on my personal radarscope shortly after the spring flood. He’d always been a force of nature in my life, so his sudden reappearance didn’t really shock me. He’d already visited me a few times during my stay in the village, usually with little or no advance warning.

We hadn’t resolved anything about our relationship during his forays to the Bush. I couldn’t help wondering why he bothered to show up at all since our relationship had completely run out of gas by then.

I was still single. He was still married. What more is there to say when it’s obvious that a man has no intention of changing his marital status?

I had already decided that we were finished, and all that remained for me to do was to persuade him of that indisputable reality. Predictably, he wasn’t at all receptive to my message that our love affair was officially over.

Lonnie went to great effort to persuade me that I should continue to indulge him and his need of me. When I resisted, he made all of his usual empty promises. In the final analysis, he failed. I’d learned my lesson. Lonnie was, in that regard, an excellent teacher.
