living room, then down the hall.

Sometimes, life is just good. Really good.

EIGHT

TEAGAN AND I met over at Bernie’s to do the last of the packing. It was really kind of sad. There’s nothing like moving the last of someone’s stuff out of their home to make everything seem final. It felt that way when we finished the garage, but finishing the house was worse.

My brothers showed up with a rented truck, stacked everything inside that wasn’t going to be shipped back to Ireland or given to a charity, and brought it all to the storage place closest to Mom.

I thought it was kind of silly to go to all the trouble of sorting everything out, then packing it all up, just to move it to storage, but Mom said that’s what she wanted done, so that’s what we did.

Mom also said she expected all of us at dinner, so Teagan and I ran off to our respective homes to clean up and tell the guys that we were informed of a command performance, the term a family joke which meant dinner was more than an invite, but slightly less than a mortal sin if you didn’t make it.

I’d just gotten out of the shower when my phone rang.

It was Teagan. “I’ve decided that tonight’s the night.”

“The night for what, exactly?”

“The night that you need to talk to Mom.”

“Talk to Mom about what?”

“About the fact that we are grown and have men in our lives, and that we aren’t afraid to live our lives as we see fit, and that if that is a problem with her, we’re sorry, but we are grown.”

“You said grown twice.”

“I know. I was trying to make a point.”

“Okay, two problems. First, if we really are grown, why do we even have to have the conversation?”

“You want Mom to just show up and be surprised?”

“Good point. Number two, why am I doing the talking?”

“For a bunch of reasons. For one thing, you are a great talker.”

“Yeah, that and half my savings will buy you a great cup of coffee.”

“And because you’re going to be a life coach, so fixing this little problem is great practice for you.”

“I haven’t committed to being a life coach. I don’t even know what it takes to be a life coach. Damn, Teagan, you’re like a puppy with someone’s

best shoe. You just won’t let it go.”

“Being tenacious is a great attribute.”

“So is being smart enough to see through your sister’s stories.”

Teagan was obviously desperate. “But she likes you best!”

“Ask her, she’ll tell you she loves us all the same.”

“True enough, but there is a difference between like and love.”

Yeah, right. I said, “Please. Everyone knows you and Liam are the favorites; I made my peace with that in eighth grade when Liam got his house key the same year I did, which was totally against the rules, and only because Mom liked him best, and it wasn’t even a little bit fair.”

“Yeah, I can see you’re over that.”

“Back to the subject at hand.
