Charity paused outside the bedroom, her thoughts in a rush. Seeing Holden talk about music had given her a new view of his personality. Heâd been different, relaxed, and forgotten about his struggles to walk.
She took the door knob in her hand, conscious of her motherâs sharp gaze, yet still didnât enter. Her mom suspected the truth, and standing here, not going in what was supposed to be her marriage bed wasnât helping that image. Charity took a breath and at last opened the door, meeting Holdenâs gaze. âYouâre not sleeping in that are you?â She nodded toward his blue jeans. She hesitated at the end of the bed.
âProbably,â he said. âNumber one, I canât unbutton them.â
That was an obvious reason. Sheâd helped him remove his shirt earlier and washed his hair over the sink, which he said gave him a neck ache, but had gone no further than that in helping him bathe.
âAnd the other?â she asked.
âI donât usually sleep in anything at all.â
Curling her hand over her mouth, Charity gave a cough. âThatâs ... thatâs a good reason.â She caught her breath. âBut it canât be comfortable to sleep in your jeans. Why not your jockey shorts?â
His lips formed a silly boyish expression. âI thought you were afraid of those.â
âIâm more afraid of the absence of them now.â
A laugh escaped, and he wiped moisture from the corners of his eyes. His joy brought a smile to her face.
âWhat about you?â he asked. âI believe I was given a promise.â
âYou heard that, huh?â
Her nervousness increased. Sheâd known that would work, and had actually surprised herself by saying it. But now, faced with following through, her doubts returned.
Heâd stated his intention up front earlier, and she hadnât been all that surprised. Theyâd gotten close, much closer than she expected when sheâd accepted his proposal. Still, acting on their mutual attraction was way beyond anything sheâd planned for.
He touched his right lobe. âMy ears work well. So where is it?â
She pulled the nightgown from behind her back and dangled it by the straps. âRight here.â The red satin fabric shimmered in the light.
âTell me,â he said. âWhy havenât you worn that? You had on that old, ratty t-shirt yesterday.â
She laid the gown over her arm and raised one finger. âLetâs see, I had two reasons.â
He pursed his lips, crookedly. âGo ahead.â
âNumber one, it bunches up when I sleep.â She raised a second finger.
âDoesnât seem like such a problem to me,â he replied.
He would say that. She made a face. âNumber two, I didnât want to give you any false impressions.â
His brows drew together involuntarily. âFalse impressions? Like what?â
âLike an invite.â
His grin broadened. âAnd now?â
âAnd now we have a deal,â she said. She paused, and he waved her on. âBut it comes in stages.â
âNow, wait a minute. You said ...â
She wrinkled her nose at him. âI know what I said, and Iâll do it. But you have to earn it.â She laid the nightgown on the end of the bed and moved to his side.
