Chapter 10

1256 hours, Mountain Daylight Time, April 22, 2025

“Fucking finally,” Wingnut said loud enough to be heard over the helicopter’s engine. As one, the Zombies all turned to verify they’d heard correctly who had spoken. Of them all, including Third Squad, nobody spoke less than Wingnut. It showed their collective level of frustration at having taken more than three days of travel to get close to Las Vegas.

The defined flight path arranged by General Cannon turned out to be anything but defined. In addition to terrorist attacks across the country, including those not only from organized groups, but also from individuals with a personal vendetta, the devastation of the earthquakes caused cracks in runways, fallen or damaged bridges and overpasses left some airfields short on fuel, and pointing lasers at airplanes had become common. With the police and emergency services fully engaged trying to keep order and help the millions of injured, and millions more refugees, working airports gave top priority to handling imports of food and medicine on the few flights that got approval to fly.

It took more than two days to arrive at Echo Bay, Arizona, after detouring across portions of Minnesota, Idaho and Southern Canada. Then they waited for almost 24 hours for the helicopter that would take them on the final leg of their trip to Las Vegas. By the time they climbed aboard the UH-60A, the only food left were some stale energy bars packed on the Gulfstream as last-ditch emergency rations. They’d expired in August of 2023.

While waiting on the tarmac, they’d had plenty of time to get caught up on the state of the nation. Things were rapidly going from bad to worse, but what made things especially troubling for the Zombies wasn’t the Chinese threatening to invade Taiwan, or the Russian buildup on the Polish border, or even the suffering of the American people as homemade EMPs ravaged the electrical grid. All of that worried him, as it did the others. What troubled Green Ghost most, though, were the draconian orders coming from the White House.

Martial law he understood. Curfews too. He could even rationalize the suspension of Habeas Corpus, since nuclear detonations threatened the country’s very existence. But the banning of all firearms not in the hands of the military or Federal agents was a bridge too far. How were police supposed to protect the public against marauding killers without guns? Even that wasn’t the worst part of it, though; elevating the terror group Antikapitalista into some sort of quasi-Federal Law Enforcement branch of Homeland Security made him wonder if President Ferris hadn’t just substituted her own private security force for traditional law enforcement agencies. It looked and felt a lot like a coup to him.
