It took Jude some time to explain the ruse of leaving the GPS in the house to Fox before Felicia called her uncle.

“I’m in, one hundred percent,” Uncle Abe said. “I’ve got a cabin with two bedrooms and a couch that won’t be rented until November.” He paused. “I’ll get it ready right now. We don’t technically open for another week, so it’s basically me and some staff. Pretty empty.”

Empty? Would that leave them more of a target or less? If Aaron found them... But Jude would make sure that didn’t happen. “As long as the animals are still there, Gracie will be thrilled.”

“Five horses Levi Duke helps me manage and the two rescued donkeys you and Nora arranged for us to get. The swimming pool’s ready, too, if her wound is healed enough that she can be in the water.”

Felicia made a mental note to ask the doctor about swimming.

Uncle Abe cleared his throat. “Honey, I know this is a stressful time for you. You sure you don’t want to call your mom?”

“Mom needs to be with her sister. I’m okay. Really. Figuring things out one day at a time.”

“That’s all we can do. See you soon, baby.”

She hung up, her uncle’s warmth echoing in her heart. Maybe it was going to be all right. But how would she handle Jude watching their every move in the cabin when she found her thoughts trending more and more in his direction?

The doorbell chimed, and she heard Jude let Nora and Seth inside. She hugged her best friend close. Nora, a head taller than Felicia, returned the squeeze.

“Audrey’s all fixed and parked outside. I’ll help you pack up some things. And my mom sent these over.” Nora wiggled a tin. “Chocolate chip and walnut. Jude’s favorite, but she figured they’d go over well with you and Gracie, too.”

Nora and Felicia watched as the GPS tracker was photographed.

“A crime scene tech in civilian clothes and car will arrive later to examine it for prints, on the off chance there are any.” Jude slid the photo out and put it in another frame Felicia had found in the garage.

“So you’re going to make the house look occupied?” Nora asked while Seth installed the timers they’d picked up on the bedroom and living room lamps.

“As best we can,” Jude said. “Lights on and off. GPS tracker still active. Her car in the driveway. It’s not foolproof, but it might buy some time for Fox to continue the investigation.”

“And you’re acting as what? A bodyguard?” Nora said.

Jude didn’t quite look at his sister. “Affirmative.”

Nora shot a quick glance at Felicia, but she kept her face even. Later in the bedroom, Nora cornered her. “So...you and Jude will be in close proximity for a while, huh?”

She nodded, folding Gracie’s T-shirts and putting them into a duffel bag.

“And how are you feeling about that?” Nora’s intense blue gaze was so like Jude’s.

“It’s not optimal, but I’m making the best of it.”

Nora sighed. “As long as you’re not being steamrolled.
