Chapter 22-Anthony

When in doubt, ask a friend.

Back from San Diego, there’s an unpleasant surprise waiting for me on Friday at the office. Tonya is at her desk.

“Here again, huh?” I don’t care if she works remotely considering Nick does the bulk of the time. I’d rather not see her every day.

“I’ve been here all week. Figured you might be missing me,” she says, giving me her best flirty grin. She figured wrong there.

“All week?” My eyes flick to Grace who’s staring intently at her computer but drinking in every word. Tonya notices. I don’t like the idea of her being around Grace, like a snake in the garden. “Has Nick been coming in?” I ask to shift to safer terrain.

“He is today.” I turn to greet Grace when Tonya speaks again. “But you’ll be seeing more of me, Anthony. For however long you need me to keep an eye on things around here.” Then, she winks at me. What the hell?

“That’s hardly necessary,” I snap.

When I turn back to Grace, she’s slipped out of her seat and I only catch a flash of her blonde hair as she heads to the ladies’ room. Fucking hell. I left the ball in her court but does this mean she’s going home with it?

We’ve only chatted briefly with me out of town and all of it was via text and email, completely professional.

I broke down Wednesday night though and called her. I wanted to hear her voice, wanted to talk to her about something other than work. Voicemail caught it and she didn’t call me back. Why didn’t she call back? It’s been driving me nuts.

I told her she’d be the boss of this aspect of our relationship and the choice is hers. I just wish I knew what her choice was. I wish the thought of her possibly saying she doesn’t actually want to pursue anything further with me didn’t kill me.

As boss and assistant, we make a great team. A great assistant was what I was after in the first place, right? She puts up with my impossible ass while I tolerate her color-coded calendars, cheerful greetings and the breakfast smoothies she brings me even if I don’t ask for them. (And by tolerate, I mean, I love every bit of it.)

Don’t forget the one thing she really wants out of her job. It’s not orgasms. It’s that bonus.

“Mr. Frost is here, sir.”

I wince hearing Grace sounding so professional through the intercom when I was in here daydreaming about all the unprofessional things I want to do with her. “Send him in, Ms. Mitchell.”

Nick comes in, shedding sunshine wherever he goes with his ginger hair and crooked grin. Look, married life is married life and little kids can run you ragged but you’d never know it when you see this happy-go-lucky fuck walking around like he’s knee-high in a field of daffodils.

“Layla said her first word and guess what it was?” he asks me without preamble.

“Da-da?”

He blinks in surprise and then nods happily.
