Chapter Twenty-Four

“What do you think?” Janey asked after we were safely down the street and inside her cozy kitchen drinking a calming cup of peppermint tea.

“I think someone has it out for Herbert St. Claire.”

“Albert?”

“There may be no love lost between Albert and Herbert, but I’m convinced it was someone else who set Herbert’s house on fire.”

“It could have been an accident,” said Janey. “No one was home when it started, so it could have been faulty wiring or something.”

“It could have been.”

But I was doubtful. Even if the official report came back that the fire was caused by faulty wiring or something equally nonsinister, I would be hesitant to believe it.

Albert Edwards definitely had it out for Herbert St. Claire, but I was very much afraid that Herbert had another, far more dangerous enemy than a cantankerous hoarder who kept a flock of peacocks.

I had a lot of questions about Herbert’s ex-wife, Darlene, but I didn’t know where to start, so I decided to ask Katie again if she knew anything more about the woman.

It turned out that she did. When I waylaid her again the following morning as she took her mid-morning break back at her trailer, she let drop a fascinating piece of information.

“I’m dating Darlene’s nephew, actually.”

“Zack?”

I tried not to look as surprised as I felt. I’d only seen Katie’s new flame a few times in the flesh, but Katies’ new boyfriend had been the subject of considerable speculation on more than one occasion.

Katie’s daughter, Chamomile, did not approve of Zack. For one thing, Zack was considerably younger than Katie, not that Chamomile was in a strong position to pass judgment on anyone else’s age-gap romance.

Chamomile was barely old enough to legally purchase alcoholic beverages, yet she harbored an ostentatious crush on Amatista’s most eligible bachelor, Jason Wendell, who was nearly a decade older than she was.

Not that I didn’t see in Jason what Chamomile saw in him. Unfortunately, it didn’t matter how big of a crush either of us had developed on Mr. Wendell. He was proving impervious to either of our attentions unless one counted the way I managed to accidentally-on-purpose finagle sharing a table with him at the Bird Cage practically every other day.

So far, though, there’d been no movement on the romance front.

The same thing could not be said for Katie and Zack. The few times I’d seen them together, it would have been impossible to mistake the nature of their relationship. They were all over each other.

“How did you meet Zack?” I asked Katie.

“We met in the grocery store.”

Amatista doesn’t have a grocery store unless you count the selection of junk food and smattering of dairy products available at the truck stop just north of town.

“Did you meet him at Hungry Harry’s?”

Hungry Harry’s is, admittedly, a strange name for a grocery store, but we’re all a little strange around here, so the place fit right in. It was the closest place to procure food, but the little hole-in-the-wall shop just off the highway before you get into Santa Fe wasn’t where we all did our major shopping.
