SIGMUND FREUD: Psychological Sciences
Sigmund Freud’s words likewise affected change on a global scale. Many forerunners had attempted to analyze the human character, such as Plutarch during the reigns of Hadrian and Trajan. Plutarch pitted Romans of great stature against Greeks of great stature in his book Parallel Lives. His purpose was to compare and contrast these figures but also gain insights about their virtues and foibles—in essence, what made them tick. However, this admirable effort was not based upon the scientific method that would only develop over a millennium later, and in this regard, Freud’s work was pioneering, albeit severely flawed.
Although Freud knew that a scientific methodology was necessary to gain academic respect and global acceptance, he was unscientifically shrewd and careless about gathering and recording his new theories on psychoanalysis. This was especially true when he analyzed his own childhood, which was the launching pad for his long psychoanalytical expedition. In thus doing, Freud was often intentionally blind to his results, or more to the point, he was intentionally deceptive in documenting them. This is now believed to be due to his strong and obsessive desire to create a new science and emerge as a heroic figure. It appears this was a vainglorious effort to be like the idols he read and fantasized about: Darwin, Copernicus, Alexander the Great, Napoleon, or even Oedipus, who he honored with his famous, or perhaps infamous, Oedipal complex.
Beyond his largely self-fabricated persona, and rightful title “Father of Psychoanalysis,” Freud’s views on sexuality, the unconscious, neurosis, and the interpretation of dreams have largely been proven false after decades of careful study. Many analysts who made erroneous Freudian diagnoses and implemented flawed Freudian therapies, which yielded results that ranged from imperceptible to disastrous, have also proved this. As many therapists today assert, Freud’s overall failure emanated from his zealous desire to formulate a science of psychoanalysis that he constructed and dictated, rather than allowing the data to speak for itself.
An examination of Freud’s numerous cases shows that he would receive negative results from patients who complained about their worsening state of digression, yet he adamantly refused to modify or change his formula for treatment. Instead, Freud would lambaste his clients, and then intrepidly document his glorious results, which deceitfully advocated his initial prognosis and therapies. Sadly, these sessions often fixated on sexual desires or fears, such as penis envy, Oedipal complex, or castration anxiety, rather than platonic emotional needs. Moreover, the science of genetics was not yet born, which added significant understanding about an individual’s mental and physical states. Despite this lack of information, however, there's no doubt he eschewed scientific methods. Freud was reckless.
He was also noted for creating universal doctrines based upon his own personal experiences. For example, Freud was prone to anxiety attacks on trains, so he fashioned an elaborate explanation that somehow linked neurotic compulsions to sex. He also formulated a similar deduction after witnessing young boys in a shoe store. Because they were fidgety and uncomfortable when a salesman slipped
