Another of McKenny’s favourite teammates was checking forward Gary Sabourin, whose run with the team was as brief as Ecclestone’s. Sabourin arrived on May 27, 1974, in a trade with the St. Louis Blues for goaltender Ed Johnston and was shipped out a little more than a year later in a trade for forward Stan Weir. While he was in Toronto, McKenny says, Sabourin kept the Leafs laughing.
“He professed to be a great outdoorsman,” McKenny said. “One time he had Darryl Sittler up to his cottage near Parry Sound [Ontario]. Sabby said he was a great fisherman.
“They were supposed to go out, but it was raining, so they were having a few pops instead. Finally, Sabby says, ‘What are you, a pussy? This is the best time to catch fish.’ So they go out [on Georgian Bay].
“They get out there, and the engine on the boat conks out. Sabby is the master engineer, and he’s back there trying to get it started. He’s pulling the rope like crazy, and finally it starts. But he had the engine in gear, and the boat took off. It swung one way, and Sabby went the other way and into the water.
“By this time it was dark. When Sitt is able to get to the back of the boat and grab the engine, Sabby is out in the water. The boat is going all over the place, and when Sitt finally gets hold of the thing, he can’t find Sabby. He could be half a mile away now. Finally, Sitt had the sense to turn the thing off, and all he hears is this voice: ‘I’m over here, you asshole. I know you can see me.’
“Sabby’s a baker now down in Chatham [in Southwestern Ontario]. He’s up at two in the morning every day, baking bread. He’s still a grinder, but he doesn’t mind. The worse things are, the funnier he is.”
