With the security force depleted after the missile strike, it was no longer feasible to have Marines guarding the entrance to President Marshall’s – and thus, John’s – pod. There’d never been security issues and the president insisted he be treated like every other passenger; he had total trust in everyone living aboard the station. It was yet another of his attempts to increase morale but the most significant thing it allowed was easier access to John’s room.

Emily entered the presidential pod and floated to the final door. She’d never been inside the room but knocked plenty of times at the door. Though she knew John and Lily were both working outside of the station, she still knocked and waited several seconds before turning the handle. Emily didn’t know what she expected to find in the room – she always had the strange feeling John was hiding something in there – but the room was like every other she’d ever been in, maybe a bit cleaner. Her curiosity motivated her to snoop around but she had no idea when the crew would quit for the day; the last thing she wanted was for John or Lily to catch her going through their stuff. The thought of them finding her in the room suddenly made her uncomfortable and she considered leaving, giving John his present later. But her plan had been to surprise him and she wasn’t giving up now that she reached the last part of her mission.

She found the perfect spot on the wall ahead of the doorway, where it would be the first thing John saw the next time he entered his room. She floated over to the wall and opened the tube, unrolling the Great Wave Off Kanagawa. Done by some Japanese artist whose name Emily couldn’t remember, the painting was of a large, aggressive wave about to inundate several small boats, an image of a snow-capped mountain far in the background. Emily found this piece of art frightening and wondered what it said about John’s personality that he found the image so appealing. She glanced around the room for anything to fasten the painting to the wall but didn’t see the usual magnets that so many others used to hang pictures.

I’ll just check the drawers real quick, she thought, though she still found nothing to hold the painting. The final place to search was the big closet. As she opened the closet door, she already started formulating her next plan in case she found no magnets. I could always put the tube in one of his drawers so the next time he changes clothes he’ll —

Emily didn’t finish that thought. Hiding in the closet in front of her was a ghost, a man supposed to have died in the asteroid strikes on the day Comet Clement struck Earth. Although Emily’s mind registered that this should’ve been shocking, everything seemed to make sense to her, especially about why John had been so distant the last year. Seeing Wesley Maddox actually made Emily feel better about herself.
