Chapter 19
Nicola
Parker was clenching and unclenching his fists. Completely naked, he was pacing the floor of my bedroom while I remained sitting on the bed, in an oversized old T-shirt, waiting for him to calm down.
âYour brother is Austin Hebertâs best friend?â He was repeating himself now. I licked my lips and shut my eyes.
âIf youâd just calm down and let me explain, Parker,â I said. I hadnât seen him so worked up before. We had both watched that segment in silence. My face was glued to the screen, as was his. Neither of us could believe what had just happened. What Austin had just said on Live National Television. Then Parker had jumped out of bed and started pacing the floor. His face and neck had gone red; he looked like he was about to have a panic attack.
âI am calm!â He thundered, and I shrunk away from him. This was a new side to Parker that I couldnât have guessed at. The polite, well-mannered man who I thought was the best boyfriend I could have had, had just turned into a raging bullish jealous man, filled with fury. He was gritting his teeth as he spoke.
âYouâve slept with him, havenât you?â He asked, and my brows rose up in anger. How did it matter what I had done, who I had slept with before him? I had never asked him who all heâd slept with before me.
âHow does that make a difference, Parker?â I asked, and he strode over to me quickly.
âHow does that make a difference? Youâve fucked Austin Hebert! How am I supposed to compete with that?â He thundered, and I shrunk away from him more, pasting my back to the back of the bed.
âNobody has to compete with anybody. I donât care about him anymore.â I said.
âAnymore! So you did care about him. Were you in love with him?â Parker was still yelling, and I was beginning to grow a little frightened. I wasnât quite sure what he was capable of anymore.
I looked back at him silently, and Parker gnawed his teeth and then whipped around, tugging his hair violently.
âParker, pleaseâ¦just settle down. Can we talk like adults?â I asked in a soft voice. He whipped around to me again, this time his eyes were bloodshot and red. I wasnât sure if he was going to break something or break into tears.
âWhat is there to talk about? You love Austin Hebert. He loves you. Or wants to fuck you again, or whatever. What more can we talk about?â He said, with his voice tearing from how loudly he was yelling.
I covered my eyes with my hands, pressed them and spoke in a muffled voice.
âI donât love him, Parker. Not anymore. I love you. I love you, Parker, not what youâre acting like now, but who you usually are.â I said, whimpering a little. I could hear Parkerâs ragged, heavy breathing; he was silent. He was processing the information he had just received, and then he suddenly calmed down.
