DAY #178
ON REGRET
We all carry big regrets—failed important relationships, bad career decisions, hurt people we love; and small regrets—things we didn’t buy or affection we didn’t share, things we did or said that we wish we could vacuum back into nonexistence.
In the biblical story of Joseph, our hero was thrown into a pit and hated by his brothers for being overly sure of himself; he was sold into slavery but then worked his way up.
Then came the gob-smacking moment when Joseph became a vizier of Egypt and confronted his brothers who came to Egypt begging for food. When he finally revealed his identity, they staggered in shock. “Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come close to me.’ When they had done so, he said, ‘I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. . . . God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance’ ” (Genesis 45:4–17).
The brothers’ criminal mistake led to fortuitous consequences, as do many bad decisions. Arthur Miller once said: “Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets.”
You regret bad decisions less when you can shape them into good outcomes. Identify a regret that you can turn into a win.
