FIRST BLOOD
Kelly stood in the doorway butt-naked with a pom-pom in each hand. A smile was plastered across her face, as if this sexual situation was an everyday occurrence. Pause was stunned to see her sister—her sister who she had spent years searching for, only to find her naked and in the midst of selling her body to a man who was marked for murder. Kelly! Her jaws went slack. Oh my God! Kelly? What are you doing? You have to sell yourself? I’ve been searching for you! And you never came back for me! Pause’s mind raced and she hesitated. Her uncertainty gave her a moment to think twice about impulsively running over and taking her sister in her arms. After all, she did have a job to do and she was determined to make it happen despite the shock of her sister’s presence. She decided to play it cool. It would all work out. She would simply have to adapt to the circumstances. Her sister’s presence explained Erroll White’s earlier delay. Apparently, he had made a side trip to pick up Kelly who seemed to have played this game before and was accustomed to the nuances of Erroll’s fantasies.
Kelly had grown into a beautiful woman. She had their mother’s face; those same startling green eyes, elegant cheekbones, and thin lips that framed the same dazzling smile that Pause had seen in their family photos. Pause looked at her and was momentarily taken back to her childhood, to the secret admiration that she once had for her sister but was too timid to openly confess. Pause had emulated her sister’s mannerisms and always held out the hope that one day she would grow up to be like her. Those days were gone. Things had changed.
Kelly had been the only constant source of love in her life. More times than she could count, the difference between despair and hope had been shared moments of quiet understanding between Pause and her sister. When they were together, Kelly’s steely exterior had been pulled away to reveal a caring soul who helped share the pain that only they two could share, displaying a love that had no place in their home. Pause looked at her sister and realized that the hurt was still ravaging her mind. Life had changed them. But they could still make things right. Together.
“Hi!” Kelly greeted her enthusiastically. Pause searched her face, looked deeply into her eyes and realized that Kelly did not recognize her. They hadn’t seen each other since Pause was in junior high school and, though she was wearing makeup and a wig, Pause was still inexplicably hurt that her sister could look her in the eye and not see her. With an effort, Pause pushed all thoughts of her sister from her mind and concentrated on her mission. First things first, she mused as she turned her animosity toward Erroll White.
He stood between them, looking from Pause to Kelly, taking extra time to stare at
