Personal Statement

When I was about 7 years old, my dad would test his Photoshop skills by creating little booklets for me to read. One was filled with facts about Titan (one of Saturn’s moons), and another was about how to pay better attention in school. One contained information on every major religion, complete with plenty of pictures. I was told that I could choose whichever religion I really connected with.

At the time, Shintoism appealed the most to me with its images of flying spirits and its value of nature. I told my dad that it was my favorite, but I never committed to it. I’ve come to appreciate many religions through studying their history and beliefs, but I’ve remained unaligned. I have been a speculator my whole life, imagining God and the supernatural but never believing through any religious lens. It almost seems too late to “choose” what I believe in, now that I have been thinking independently for so long.
