Ting Jing and Dong Jing

As I pointed out earlier, ting jing, or sensitivity, is fundamental to the practice of pushing hands. As your sensitivity improves, you will acquire dong jing the ability to interpret what your partner intends to do through the sense of touch. As you feel your partner's arm or any other body part, you will be able to detect whether he or she is. rooted or "floating;' that is, in a position where one may easily be unbalanced. You will be able to feel the slightest move on your partner's part, and if it is the presage to an attack, you will be able to take appropriate neutralizing action. It must be stressed that this skill is a natural development from ting jing and that if you concentrate on ting jing, dong jing will follow.

Experienced pushing hands exponents often feel that they know what their opponent is thinking when they join hands, and it is certainly possible to detect whether your partner has a hostile or friendly intent just by touching him.
