CHAPTER FORTY-ONE
Penny Hayes
As I zipped up my black dress in my bedroom, I caught Dillon checking me out. âHey, what are you looking at?â
âThe most beautiful woman in the world,â he replied with a sweet smile. âI⦠Iâm sorry about your friendâs son. How old was he?â
âTwenty-six, I think. He just got married and had a baby on the way. It doesnât get any more tragic than that.â
âDamn⦠that sucks.â
I turned to face him while relaxing on the bed. âSo⦠do you think you could come to the funeral with me today? Normally, Lainey would come pick me up, but we havenât talked. Itâll be strange to be there and not sit with her.â
âWell, I mean, I didnât know the guy or his mom. Iâd probably feel out of place.â
âMaybe not. Thereâs uh⦠one of those luncheon things after the service at Bethâs house. I bet Sydney Hart will be there. It would be great for you to meet her. Oh, and thereâs a TikTok influencer named Ava. Maybe she could help you go viral.â
A strange expression emerged on Dillonâs face as he grabbed a pillow and clutched it to his chest. âUm⦠look⦠the truth is. The last funeral I went to was my momâs and it messed me up. It was just the two of us my whole life and when she died⦠I donât think I can go with you.â
I went to him. âOf course. I understand. I had no idea you lost your mom. Iâm so sorry.â
âThanks,â he replied and hung his head.
âWhat about your dad? Is he alive? Are you close?â
âI donât like to talk about it, but I was adopted, so I never knew my bio dad.â
âWow. No wonder losing your mom was so tough. Have you ever thought about searching for your biological parents?â
With a sigh of annoyance, he got up and moved away from me. âYeah, so I canât have this conversation. Iâm gonna bounce. I need to hit the gym.â
âDillon, hey, what just happened? Did I piss you off?â
âNo, babe. Itâs not you. Itâs me. Iâll meet you back here tonight?â
âSure. I have a feeling Iâll be wiped out by the time I get home. I donât think Iâll want to be alone.â
He planted a soft kiss on my forehead. âYouâre not alone. Youâve got me.â
Did I? Did I have Dillon? Why did I sense he was a mystery, wrapped in a riddle with something to hide?
