When Marc made it back over to Pete, the holder was watching as the kids streamed out into the Safe Zone. Marc followed his eyes and immediately noticed what Pete had added when he'd enlarged his Safe Zone. There was a pond near the back wall that hadn't been there before.

“You managed to expand again?” Marc asked.

“Yup. We actually had a few more people come straggling in. One of them offered up their token they got for getting a class after we helped them get it. So I did that and put in the fishing pond you told me about before. We were getting a fair bit of game before, but now we can have fish any old time. Makes the vegetables go down easier, but I've already had fish and chips enough that I think I'm turning British.”

“In only two weeks?” Marc asked.

“We had it like four or five nights running since none of us had eaten fish since before the System showed up.”

“Well, I'm glad you like it, because I brought you a present. Didn't know how your food would be doing, so...”

Marc pulled the hundred pounds of catfish fillets out and offered them to Pete.

“Catfish?” Marc said.

“Damn boy, what did you do, drain a pond and kill all the fish?” Pete asked.

“You wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I'll give you a clue. This was all from one fish, and it wasn't all, or even most, of it.”

Pete's eyes went wide.

“Yes, the damned thing was trying to eat us when we killed it. We weren't going to let it go to waste though, so we got as much meat off of it as we could,” Marc said.

“That sounds like quite a story. How about I have my people cook us up a feast and you can tell me all about it over dinner?”

Marc shook his head.

“Sorry, Pete. I'll have to take a rain check. I've been away from my own Safe Zones for two weeks and I'm really edgy about it. I will give you a quick run down though. You see, there's one major and several smaller Safe Zones back in the city...”

They ended up spending about two hours there, half of it spent in Marc telling Pete all about the other Safe Zones they found, and mentioning that trade was a definite possibility, one that could be facilitated by the zeppelin.

When they were pulling out again, Katie had a much bigger smile on her face. Marc took a moment to walk over near her as the zeppelin was rising into the sky.

“He showed himself to you?” Marc asked.

“He let me ride him around inside of the gondola,” Katie said, teeth exposed by the massive grin on her face. “It was awesome.”

“Good, he really is kind of big, isn't he?”

She nodded, her fingers twitching as she scratched and petted Beggar.

“He is, he's something else.”

“Well, if you're staying at the Safe Zone we're going to, then he'll be around and I'm sure he'll
