HIJACK

As directed, Marty’s wedding party meets in a suite just off the main wedding chapel. The Evergreen Suite is well-furnished with two large brown faux leather couches and two matching chairs. Pale wood paneling spans the walls, which are adorned with prints from Earth’s many forests.

“Ah, this reminds me of home.” Sonny gazes with pride toward a print of a grove of tall redwood trees on a sunny day. He looks classy and unfamiliar, suited up in a black one-piece with a matching blazer, shirt, and tie. His eagle tattoo is barely visible above the collar.

“How so? We never grew up in luxury,” says Marty. He’s wearing a white one-piece, tailored blazer, and matching shirt. A loose tie sits around his neck.

“The luxury of living in mother nature,” Sonny explains, walking over to pull a Solaris from the mini fridge. “It’s too bad we’ve stripped Earth of everything she can give.”

I frown. “When I went to Earth last year, the oceans and forests were beautiful.”

“Very few majestic forests still stand, plus not everyone can afford the time or the cost to visit,” Lee adds. He sits down on the couch in his black one-piece, blazer, white shirt, and matching black tie.

“Guess people should have fought harder for the Earth.” I sit next to him.

A large display on the wall flips through various Symphony announcements as we wait. There isn’t a lot of talking until Marty points toward the screen. The words “Marriage of Suji Wati & Martin Roberts - The Unity Chapel at 10:00 a.m.” reflect back at us with a picture of the Earth in the background.

“Unity. A place to bring everyone together,” I say sarcastically.

Lee’s brow furrows. “It is possible, Ethan. On Earth and elsewhere.”

“I haven’t seen much to support that. Don’t you remember last year when the Grey District was left to fail from the power outages? I haven’t seen much unity on Luna, and I didn’t see any on Earth either.”

“You bring people together with your parties, so it is possible. Just look at the Night Owls.”

Eeya laughs in my ear. “Ethan Keller, the unity builder. Give me a break.”

I wish she’d give me a break. But it’s hard to disagree with her. Our group is special, sure, but it’s just us. It’s not like an army of six could create unity on Luna.

“It’s possible to find unity on Luna, on Mars, and across the solar system,” Lee says with conviction. “Sure, we fight sometimes, but we have to believe we can become better people.”

If he knew what had happened on the Neptuno, I wonder if he would say the same. Images of Ezequiel’s smug face, of Suji being thrown halfway across Central, and of Aysha’s wide, scared face flash through my mind. My heart buzzes with an all-too-familiar rush of anger, and I open my mouth to argue when Marty’s voice interrupts me.

“Holy frak, I’m getting married.”

I pause, unaccustomed to my friend’s vulnerability. Turning away from Lee, I take a deep breath to collect my frustration.
