Eating

For pizza or pasta, any of the places around Piazza della Riforma are lively enough.

Ristorante Santabbondio ITALIAN $$$

(091 993 23 88; www.ristorante-santabbondio.ch; Via Fomelino 10, Sorengo; mains Sfr72-75, tasting menus Sfr84-158; lunch & dinner Wed-Mon) Michelin-starred Santabbondio is Lugano’s culinary star. Olive trees hint at chef Martin Dalsass’ olive-oil obsession. Specialities like zucchini flowers with buffalo-milk ricotta and Breton red mullet with squid and pistachio sauce are exquisitely cooked and presented. Dine in the elegant beamed restaurant or on the chestnut-shaded terrace. It’s a seven-minute train ride from Lugano; take the S S60 to Sorengo Laghetto.

Al Portone ITALIAN $$

Offline map Google map (091 923 55 11; www.ristorantealportone.ch; Viale Cassarate 3; mains Sfr30-50; lunch & dinner Tue-Sat) Bold artworks grace this contemporary gourmet haunt. Here Silvio and Sabrina ply you with such creative delights as John Dory with beetroot pannacotta, and butter-soft veal shanks infused with pepper and grappa. It has a three-course set lunch (Sfr58) and a tasting feast menu at night (Sfr120).

Grand Café Al Porto CAFE $

Thetortes, pastries and fruit cakes are irresistible. Upstairs is the frescoed Cenacolo Fiorentino, once a monastery refectory.

L’Antica Osteria del Porto ITALIAN $$

Offline map Google map (091 971 42 00; Via Foce 9; mains Sfr29-35; lunch & dinner Wed-Mon) Set back from Lugano’s sailing club, this is the place for local fish and Ticinese dishes like polenta crostiniwith porcini. The terrace overlooking the Cassarate stream is pleasant, as are the lake views.

Bottegone del Vino ITALIAN $$

Offline map Google map (091 922 76 89; Via Magatti 3; mains Sfr28-42; lunch & dinner Mon-Sat) Favoured by the lunchtime banking brigade, this is a great place to taste fine local wines over a well-prepared meal. The menu changes daily and might include steamed turbot fillet or ravioli stuffed with fine Tuscan Chianina beef. Knowledgeable waiters fuss around the tables and are only too happy to suggest the perfect Ticino tipple.

Bottega dei Sapori CAFE $

Offline map Google map (Via Cattedrale 6; snacks & light meals Sfr6.50-18; 7.30am-7.30pm Mon-Wed, to 9pm Thu-Fri, 9am-7.30pm Sat) This high-ceilinged cafe-bar does great salads, panini (for instance air-dried beef, goat’s cheese and rocket) and coffee. The pocket-sized terrace is always packed.

La Cucina di Alice ITALIAN $

Offline map Google map (091 922 01 03; Riva Vela 4; mains Sfr36-55; lunch & dinner) Bird houses and cute ducks hang from the walls at this girly pretty restaurant, serving fresh fish and inventive concoctions such as green-tea pasta.
