Chapter Ten

Jessica made the twenty-minute trip to Bruce’s house in her usual twelve minutes, since there was no one sitting next to her complaining about her driving.

Bruce was in his study with Ben Bookman, his attorney, when she came in.

“Liz left already,” he said when he saw her. “Do you have any new information?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Are you kidding? To save you.”

“Thanks, but it’s going to take more than green makeup to save me.”

“You are so right. Crisis management is what you need. Just close your eyes and pretend you’re Amanda Knox and leave the rest to me.”

“Jess, I’m not in the mood.”

“I’m not kidding. This is my specialty. Making people love what I want them to love. In this case it’s going to be you. Have you issued a statement yet?”

Bruce wasn’t used to this take-charge working Jessica, but he was so devastated by what had happened he was almost punch-drunk, ready to follow anyone, even his nutty, putative sister-in-law.

“No, I haven’t said anything yet. I don’t even know what they’re talking about. This intern said I picked her up in a bar and tried to force her to have sex with me.”

“It’s good you didn’t say anything yet. The first announcement is the one that counts. Everything else comes off that. If that one’s no good, you turn into a political hack dribbling out pieces and then changing them. We have to prepare your statement.”

“I was just working on that with Bruce,” Ben said. This was so outside his normal law practice he was grateful for any help he could get. But Jessica was in her métier and she was good. Now she even had Bruce’s full attention. It wasn’t the Jessica he was used to, but he was desperate and she seemed to know what she was doing. She was a professional.

“I have to hear the story from the beginning. Every detail.”

“Should I go?” Ben asked.

“No,” Jessica said. She could see that he was impressed with her. And besides, he was cuter than she remembered. “We need you.”

The three of them sat down and Jessica opened her laptop and began taking notes.

“Do you know who this intern is?”

“No. That’s what’s so weird.”

“You mean you never were in a bar with any intern?”

“If this is the incident at Charm in July, there was no intern.”

“But there was an incident?”

Jessica realized that this was going to be harder than she’d expected. After all, her sister was in love with this man and she was maybe going to find out things she didn’t want to know.

“There was no intern. I had a meeting with Alan Bloom in the Charm at around six that night. I remember it clearly because I had just sat down when the bartender accidentally spilled some gooey pink drink on me. It got all over my jacket. He apologized profusely and told me there was an attendant in the men’s room with some cleaning fluid who could get it off before it stained permanently.

“I told
