Nick pulled the car into the driveway and parked it next to a dark red 1953 Jaguar XK 120 convertible. Maddie shook her head. "Low key has never been her style."

He let out a low whistle. "Now, that's a car."

She laughed. "I suppose it is a little closer to what you are used to, huh?"

He nodded, and she smiled seeing the look of pure adoration for the vehicle on his face. "Who does it belong to?"

"Celeste, of course." After Maddie got out of the car, she peeked her head back in the window. "Who else would drive around in something like that without a care in the world?"

Nick snorted. "Only a witch."

Maddie nodded in agreement and went inside to look for their visitor. After several unsuccessful minutes of searching, Maddie headed out onto the grounds and spotted Celeste beyond the main yard in the cemetery. "Nick, I'm heading out to see what she has planned. You stick around here and keep an eye on Aunt Betsy."

"Okay, but I don't like the idea of you being out there with that witch all alone."

"I'm pretty positive my step-mother didn't come all the way out here to hurt me. It'll be alright." She made the trek out to the cemetery. Finding the witch standing with her eyes closed, Maddie approached quietly and stood next to Celeste. The woman stayed silent for several minutes. Maddie got the distinct impression she was concentrating on something and didn't want to be interrupted. When Celeste finally opened her eyes, Maddie breathed a sigh of relief. "I was beginning to think you were in a trance or something."

Celeste laughed. "In a way, you'd be right. I was closing off the borders of the cemetery and finding a nice place for us to work. Come."

Maddie followed, and five minutes later found herself standing in a spot even further into the cemetery as the witch rambled instructions a few feet away.

Celeste stood off to the side near a cluster of tombstones, and Maddie sat cross-legged in the patch of grass. Glancing one more time at Celeste for reassurance, she wished she had a few more days to get used to the idea of what she had to do.

Celeste laughed. "Stop stalling; he won't hurt you."

"Says the witch in the cemetery," Maddie whispered.

"I heard that."

Maddie groaned and held out a handful of clovers, waving them in the air and making a soft clicking noise. "Here, boy. Come here."

The creature made a rustle in the taller grass in the distance. Celeste hissed, "He's coming, just stay calm."

Maddie growled through gritted teeth, "I hate this plan."

"Oh, they're harmless."

Maddie turned her head. "Then you do it."

Celeste shook her head. "They don't like witches. We… Well, sometimes they are used as spell ingredients."

"What do you mean used as?"

"Well parts of them. Usually harvested while they are still alive. So they tend to give us a wide berth.
