Chapter 16

On hands and knees, I scrubbed another decade’s worth of grime from the same tile on the kitchen floor. Another three years of scrubbing and it might actually be clean. It was a real shame I couldn’t torch the grime using my newfound magical powers without risking burning the whole house down.

As I worked, something niggled in the back of my mind. Like there was something I should have remembered but didn’t. For whatever reason, it was just out of reach.

With the help of Jen, her son, and a couple of her son’s friends, moving into my new house had been quick. Of course, the speed was helped by the fact that I owned almost nothing. That had been the easy part. The hard part was in the elbow grease, which I really didn’t mind all that much. Cleaning was an essential part of baking, and nothing worthwhile in life was easy. I’d already put in three full days and nights of cleaning, and each chore left me happier and more satisfied than the last. It didn’t hurt that I hadn’t seen Molly in that time.

This was my house—mine, and mine alone.

I bought it. I’d take care of it. And I’d enjoy it, because I’d actually moved into my freaking dream house. If I was the throwing fists at the sky type of victor, I’d be doing that now. But I was more of a “work and work until it’s done” type, and the “quietly celebrate my accomplishments with a cold beer” type.

I took a swig of the bottle of Flame Orchard that sat beside me on the floor. It wasn’t my usual brand, but when I had seen it at the store, I thought of Julian. The pleasant memory of our night together was reason enough to buy the brand.

Since we were next door neighbors now, I expected we’d see each other sooner or later. Sooner worked for me. But when I’d dropped by on move-in day, he’d been out, probably working because he had a real job, and I’d been busy since. I didn’t know where I stood with my job at the magic shop.

The doorbell rang, leaving me to wonder if that was him.

I peeled the thick rubber gloves from my hands and tossed them on the floor by my scrub brush before heading for the door.

The bell rang again and again. It was either an emergency or a small child, but definitely not Julian.

“I’m coming!” I called, letting my annoyance shine through my voice.

The bell rang one last time before I reached and threw open the door. Greeting me was a brown bag, swinging back and forth in my face.

“Brunch-o-clock.” Jen dropped the bag down low enough for me to see her overly enthusiastic expression.

“My favorite,” I said, meaning it. Every ounce of annoyance I had felt was gone as soon as I saw Jen.

She pushed past me and looked around as she headed for the kitchen. “How goes the cleaning?”

“Slow.”

“I can stay and help for a spell.
