The Perils of (Sequel) Pornography

April 1989

Ever since the silent-movie-era Perils of Pauline left moviegoers cliff-hanging in anticipation, the film industry has made a lot of hay over the “spectacular sequel,” the imitation of the imitation of the imitation of the original. You might think that horror flicks have the corner on the most ridiculous number of sequels (how many nightmares on Elm Street have you had?). But when it comes to pornography, sequels aren’t the exception, they’re the rule.

X-rated films like The Devil in Miss Jones, Deep Throat and Talk Dirty to Me have so much nostalgia and scandal attached to their titles that the sequels they spawn can’t help but hit the best-seller charts.

The initial sales and rentals are prompted by curiosity and confusion, but, unfortunately, the sequel tapes themselves do very little to enhance their namesakes. The key to understanding the popularity of the porn-sequel phenomenon is based on marketing technique that relies on pairing a catchy title with consumer ignorance and desperation. Most people know so little about adult videos that when they make their first trips to the adult section of the video store, they’re likely to grab anything superficially appealing and get out fast.

From within the recesses of our 1970’s counterculture memories, those of us over twenty-one remember names like Deep Throat and The Devil in Miss Jones and assume they must be state-of-the-art erotic cinema if we recognize their tag. Not so! These films are famous not because they are so brilliant but because they represent the historical point at which hardcore films came out of the closet and into public consciousness.

Deep Throat is undoubtedly the most undeserving, arbitrary blockbuster ever to run through a projector. The Devil in Miss Jones, on the other hand, were it released today, would raise more sophisticated controversy among film critics and the sexual avant-garde than it did in the early 70s — it’s a heavy movie, not a dirty movie.

Average video shoppers know none of these distinctions. All they know is that they’re eager to make a quick decision and want to make “rational” choices out of the myriad bubblegum box covers displayed in front of them. A typical decision is “All right, I’ll go with the classics.”

If you are expecting Edgar Allan Poe, forget it. Most adult-video sequel series take gigantic leaps from the original film they were based on, and the consequences range from soup to nuts. In the best case, you have something like The Devil in Miss Jones, an original which spawned a four-part series well worth watching even though the various segments are wildly different from one another.

The first Devil is probably as close as erotica on film has come to embracing tragedy. DIMJ 2 is an unapologetic light comedy and DIMJ 3 & 4 are out-and-out farce.

The most shameful cases of the series virus are movies like Miami Spice, which have nothing going for them except a catchy title. The joke’s on you if you think you’re going to get even a whiff of Donnie Johnson.
