Chapter 11

"Oh, baby," Erica sighed. "You sure you've never done that before?"

"Yeah, I'm sure."

"Well, you're a natural." She kissed me. "I needed that. I'm always so strong and tough that I like being out of control for a little while, I guess."

Erica narrowed her eyes while smiling at me. "Did you like it?"

"Yeah, actually, I did. I surprised myself. I didn't think I was that kind of guy."

"Hey, I unlocked a new kink in ya. That's hot." She gave me a slow wink. "Feel like takin' it up another notch next time?"

"I'll try."

We lay there for a little while longer, just breathing together and recovering, and then we used a water bottle to clean ourselves up, got dressed, and headed out of the shelter.

When we stood outside, the sky had turned a strange shade of pink as the sun started to set. Erica pushed the button to collapse the insta-shelter back into its box-like form again. She got down on her knees to hide it under a rock hidden in a patch of flowers.

She stood up, wiping dirt off her hands onto her pants. "There. That should be enough to hide our little love shack."

We headed back to our camp, holding hands. By the time we got there, night had fallen.

The women all sat around the fire pit and ate another meal of fruits and vegetables.

Mei-Ling looked up as we approached, but looked back down and said nothing. I felt another jab of guilt thinking she might be upset with me.

I sat down and looked over the food. Some of it looked good, others looked strange, and others looked kind of nasty. I decided to help myself to a bowl of soft stringy roots. They tasted earthy but good.

Loobee said, "Loobee tell girls about plan."

"Okay, good."

"Bazara no come."

"Yeah, I figured." I didn't look at Bazara, knowing she probably sat in the same corner, glaring at me. I felt a little disappointed in her but told myself we had to give her time.

I looked over the remaining women with a nod. They looked determined. "Okay, we're splitting into two teams. Mei-Ling, Thikosa, Kasumi, and Naomi, I want you to take the fire root. Make a pile of firewood in front of the camp, mixed with fire roots. When you hear a sign like this, set off the fire root."

I made a whistling noise like a bird.

"Bird call?" Naomi raised her eyebrows. "On a planet with no birds?"

I picked up the rifle and checked the ammunition. It only had two shots left. "I don't know how to make any other calls, and maybe the poachers won't notice until it's too late. When I make the signal, start the fire and I want all of you to run. Get a good distance away and wait for us. Erica, Loobee, and Inoni, you come with me. When the fire draws them out, we'll go into the camp from the rear. Once we get the prisoners, we'll send them your way. If we get the ship going, we'll try to fly it over to you.
