Will You Work the Hidden Agenda or the Business Issue? Just because you know the hidden selfish motive doesn’t mean you should name it. You can more safely address the presenting business issue. Larry should only have argued his profit concern based purely on the numbers, logic, and merits of his business case. He could have discouraged the store opening by pointing out the competition in the area, showing the density of nearby restaurants, and proposing alternative locations that would generate more revenue, all without naming the hidden agenda about bonuses. Steer clear of covert territory that’s hard to prove in order to protect yourself in case you’re wrong about a hidden agenda. Besides, even if you’re correct, your adversary is probably cunning enough to cover his tracks so that you’ll end up looking callous to accuse him of ulterior motives. What’s your true business need? Is it to show him up as a sleaze or to help the company and avoid blocks to your own goals? Just stick with the facts.

Will You Win the Battle Only to Lose the War? You may avoid the issue altogether if you’d win the battle but at too great a cost. Take into account the person’s position power, political style, and your respective power networks. Unless you or the company will get into hot water if you don’t work an issue, you may let some issues go. This might earn you the freedom to argue other issues without being seen as a constant nitpicker.

When and Where ? Plan when you’ll surface the issue. In spite of our caution, if you must confront an actual hidden agenda, there are pros and cons to doing it in public. If you meet in private, the accused may appreciate the face-saving effort and respect for his ego, or he could figure that you can’t prove anything without witnesses. In a group, the risk is much greater of creating a public uproar, but you might want to do so for protection. Just know that either choice means you risk “wounding the king,” especially if you do so in open battle.
