TWENTY-ONE

Atlas

Culver City, California

“Where is he?” Atlas whispered from under a flipped car.

James’ eyes were wide, his mouth slightly ajar. “I don’t know.”

It had gone quiet. An hour ago, they’d encountered the terrifying beast, its glowing tentacles lashing for them. Instead of facing off against the unknown, they’d done what any sane person would do in that scenario. They ran.

They were concealed in the heart of a giant warehouse, and hadn’t seen the male since escaping. But other creatures lurked nearby, including a cluster of smaller Crawlers. Atlas spotted them near the entrance, their tendrils waving as they searched for the intruders.

This room was covered in growth, specifically near the east wall, and they purposefully chose to hide across the space. A green worm inched its way by Atlas’ foot, and he stomped on it, smearing the color like paint.

“We can’t just sit around,” James said. “We better…”

The ground rumbled, shaking the prop car they used as cover.

The beast burst through the floor, sending shards of the stored set material flying. It rained down on the underside of the vehicle, and Atlas winced as the creature bellowed in anger. It was the ugliest alien Atlas had ever seen, and that was saying a lot. His body was held up by six thick legs, unlike the queen’s thinner appendages. The glowing tips of its fleshy vines pulsed as they moved, adding to the terror.

“Here goes nothing!” James said with determination. He popped up, shooting at the male. The plasma barely missed, scorching the wall behind it. The beast spun, attacking the spot.

“It’s not overly bright,” Atlas said.

“Do you think that matters?” James tried again, while crouched and running at full speed. One of the blasts struck, and the monster reared.

Atlas gasped when their enemy jumped, landing upside down on the ceiling, twenty feet up. It clutched a high-bay light, shattering the protective glass. Drops of green slime dripped from its mandibles, and the props hissed and smoked when the liquid hit them. “It’s acidic!”

“No shit!” James shouted. He fired, but the beast jumped, moving to the next fixture. The monster screamed and spat a giant glob of slime. It splashed near James, and Atlas’ friend scrambled back, his boot melting as he stepped in the hazardous goop. James kicked the slime off, but didn’t stop to assess the damage.

Atlas realized he’d been a silent witness to this event and grabbed his gun, raising it up. “Here goes nothing…” He shot at the large glowing target, missing as it fell from the ceiling, thudding directly between James and Atlas.

“Get out of here!” James roared, but Atlas was frozen.

“Not on your life!” Atlas shot it in the back, but he didn’t slow. The monster kept heading for James. It ducked and jumped as they tried to take it down. Atlas ran, seeing James cornered in the warehouse. Something jutted from under another prop car, and the huge Crawler tripped, crashing to his knees.

The male rose high on his haunches, standing directly over James. Atlas watched as the operative pressed the trigger, but nothing happened.
