“Hiya!” Sariah growled as she pushed her blade forward. She lashed out with all the might and speed she could muster, but Will still managed to parry her attack with ease.
She furrowed her brow and scowled at him. How was he so good?
“Your front foot is too far forward,” he chided her. “I could lop it off with ease from this angle.”
Sariah huffed, but she adjusted her position. Will was right. She’d left herself exposed. Will might hate her, but his critiques on her form were always on point, and she was getting better.
Gabe never taught me like this, she mused.
Her stomach lurched at the thought of Gabe, and she felt a strange tingling in her chest. She supposed it could be heartache. Gabe had been a big part of her life. He’d been her first real mentor, her first kiss. She’d always remember that fondly.
With her mind focused on Gabe, she didn’t see Will’s practice blade come at her, and it rapped her on the forehead.
“Ow!” Sariah groaned, rubbing the spot. She was pretty sure it was going to leave a nasty bruise.
“Your fault,” Will quipped. “You need to stay focused, air brain.”
“Ugh.” She rolled her eyes, but inwardly, she knew Will was right. Worse, he was always right. No matter what the topic was, he always seemed to know the answer to everything.
It was annoying and exhausting. But what could she do? He was her teacher.
“If you lose focus during a real combat situation, you’re dead,” Will continued. “You need to keep your mind centered on the matter at hand. Ruminating on the past can wait for later. Rule one, remember?”
“Yes sir,” she replied in a disgusted tone. Him and his stupid rules. He had one for everything. Rule one was to always keep your mind in the present. Which, she had to admit, was a good rule. Even if it did come from him.
A smile crept across Will’s lips. “Very good. Now try that last move again. This time, don’t overextend your foot. Remember to keep your hand at chest level so you can control the blade better.”
Sariah nodded and gripped her blade tight, pushing all thoughts of Gabe and their ill-fated relationship behind her. Then she made the slight adjustment and lunged forward.
Once again, Will blocked the blow with ease.
“Grr!” Sariah growled. She mentally reprimanded herself and shook her head.
Don’t get angry, get better she heard in her head. It was another of Will’s stupid rules. Rule twelve, she thought. She even said it in his mocking voice.
“Much better. A worse opponent would have been skewered there,” Will said, looking smug. “Of course, I’m no weakling. Try again. This time remember to follow the tip of your sword with your eyes and look at where you want it to go, not where it is. The sword is an extension of your arm. It goes where you tell it to.”
Sariah swung her blade again, swinging it a tiny bit higher this time. Will deflected the blow like he wasn’t even trying.
