“I’m surprised you asked to come here, Calypso. Reading about which spoon to serve yourself with doesn’t seem conducive with your previous plans. Has so much changed already? Do you wish to stay… to bed Valac?”
My eyes cut to the side at Hawk’s biting words, my temper flared at his assumption, and unable to contain my anger, I peered quickly around to ensure Whitmire still held his spot by the door. As I stared at my guard, him seeming bored as he tried to summon a ball of light in his hands, I grabbed Hawk by the wrist, ignoring the tingle of awareness at the touch, and yanked him further down the aisle until we were hidden by a shelf of books. It was fortunate that the library was bigger than I’d anticipated, so we were out of view when I pushed my finger into Hawk’s chest and met his heated gaze.
“By the stones, you may be the most arrogant man I’ve ever met. That includes Valac. To answer your question, no, my plans have not changed, but my need to spend as little time in that confining room has. I feel like I’m fading, trapped in there, and this is the best way to get some time out of there and with you. If you’re going to be hard-headed about it though, you can go.”
At my hissed words, he reared back like I struck him, and for the first time, a vulnerability that normally didn’t exist in his cunning eyes appeared. As he studied my face, he took the smallest step closer and my hair feathered back from my face from his breath. He tracked the motion with his eyes but didn’t move away.
Lifting a hand like he’d touch me, it hung suspended between us as he stared into my eyes. “You want to spend time with me? Is it to ask about Ash and Fox? I’ve told you what I know. That they’re going out of their minds to get to you. That’s all I know though, so if there’s nothing else…”
“Of course I care to hear about them. But if you say they’re safe, then I’m trusting your word. I wanted to speak with you, for you, Hawk. Emel… I mean, Divine Charoite, she told me a lot of things. Some things are more clear than others. She wouldn’t say how, but she hinted that she could see my future and that of the thousands of ways it could go, there was at least one that ended happily.”
His eyes lit, and as he dropped his hand, he leaned back just a bit so that we could talk. “That’s fantastic. Did she say how to have that future happen? What we needed to do?” he asked, appearing so excited, but with a sad smile, I shook my head and watched his face fall. I almost wished I could take it back and keep his happy smile a little longer. He was beautiful when he smiled.
I couldn’t take it
