CHAPTER 18

Fors’no wasn’t exactly languishing. Even the holding cells in Bandaray were nice. The walls and floor were stone, with metal bars across the top and front. The holding cells were located near a cluster of administrative offices and processing facilities that provided materials and food for the various species living and visiting the hidden planet.

There was a wooden stool to sit on and a canvas hammock for sleeping. His cell had running water, and he was given plenty of food and some less potent fruit grown in the biodomes. Arq brought a plate of Hargonia slices. They were sweet, tangy fruits with very strong concentrations of NT7, which made most species feel relaxed and uninhibited. The fruit was a controlled substance on some planets and outlawed on others.

“Hello, old man,” Fors’no said, getting off the wooden stool and approaching the bars of his cell. “You brought a friend.”

“I’m no friend of yours,” Mo’galli snapped. “I’m here to make sure you tell us everything you know about the attack on Pappisbad.”

Fors’no grinned. His thin lips pulled back, his jowls bunched, and his pointed teeth were bared. The look wasn’t pleasant, nor did it seem jovial. Arq understood it as a threat.

“I know it was a great victory for my master. I know your kind suffered and died in great numbers. I passed over the site of your demise, and it… was… beautiful.”

“I’ll tear your head off you, you dog-faced traitor!” Mo’galli snarled.

He jumped forward so fast that Fors’no didn’t have time to move. Mo’galli’s thick shoulder slammed into the bars of the cell so hard that dust puffed from where the bars were set into the stone walls. With a growl, he reached between them and grabbed the front of Fors’no’s shirt.

“Wait!” Arq called out.

But Fors’no didn’t wait. He bent down and bit Mo’galli’s thick hand. Blood squirted through Fors’no’s pointed teeth a split second before Mo’galli jerked his hand back through the bars. The only problem was that Fors’no was still latched on. The sudden movement jerked him straight into the unyielding bars and knocked him senseless.

“That was unfortunate,” Arq said as Mo’galli shook his hand and spattered blood on the ground.

“Oh, that piece of filth has probably given me some dreadful disease.”

“Better get that hand looked at,” Arq told Mo’galli. “I’ll wait for the prisoner to wake up.”

“It was an accident, you know,” Mo’galli said. “I let go of his shirt.”

“But he didn’t let go of you,” Arq said. “You are a good member of the Order, Mo’galli, of that there is no doubt. No one will hold this incident against you. Go, get the aid you need.”

“Thanks,” Mo’galli said.

He hurried off to the medical facility while Arq unlocked the door to the cell. He had to step over Fors’no’s unconscious body to get in. There was always the chance that his old apprentice was faking unconsciousness and would try to escape. Arq was getting older. He had left his Cidian sword in his quarters and was unarmed.
