Buddy Rogers escorted me out to the ring, and like I said, he was just riding my coattails. He had fancy suits and a nice look about him so he got over with the crowd, but everyone was there to see me. I remember watching the match recently and someone was holding a sign that said, “When Snuka Flies, Muraco Dies.” I loved that.
I remember walking around the ring and just looking up at the cage. I slowly made my way in the ring, and brudda, the best part was when I got in and started locking up with Don. The fans were electric, and we built it up and up. We took our time, brah. We were just cruising—taking it one step at a time. We checked each other out first, and then we went for it.
You have to go slowly. That tells the story, and allows you the time to figure out what the fans are expecting next. I started off with some chops, and Don sold them. We were dancers in there. But we were also listening to the crowd and having fun the whole time. The whole time, we were choreographing where we were going. I was like, “C’mon, brudda, kick me right in the gut!” When he threw me into the steel cage, I quickly juiced my forehead. They don’t bleed in wrestling much today—they don’t know how to, and they don’t know when. It’s all in the timing. Don threw me into the cage, and I sold it, brudda.
We talked through every move. When we both started climbing the cage together, it was all planned—so was the ending. I knew I’d give Don a head butt, and he would go flying out the cage door and win the match. It was just perfect. Again, I was never a glory guy. I didn’t care about the belt. I cared about telling a good story in the ring and making everyone who paid their money to see the match happy. So, when Muraco won, I sold it that I was going cuckoo. I was screaming, “No way!” I didn’t want it to end, brah. I took Muraco and put him back in the cage. The match was not over yet!
I picked him up and suplexed him, and Muraco made sure he was in the center of the ring. I looked up at the cage and started climbing the wall. Later, when I watched the match on tape, I loved how Gorilla Monsoon called it, saying the place was going “bananas.” They really were, bruddas! It was just like the time I tried to splash Backlund when I was a heel, only better. Now I was a face, and I was about to do something that had never been done before. So, I climbed up, and I splashed him. But again, I did it right and I did it slow. I protected Don with my arms and my knees, and Don kept his arms up and slowly lifted himself off the mat.
